Under the guidance and protection of Mary…

The Legion of Mary is a lay apostolic organization within the Catholic Church, dedicated to evangelization and personal sanctification through prayer and active works of charity. Founded in 1921 in Dublin, Ireland, by Frank Duff, the Legion follows a structure similar to a military organization, with members forming "praesidia" (local groups) under higher governing councils.

Mission and Activities

The Legion’s mission is to bring people closer to Christ through Mary, inspired by the Marian devotion of St. Louis de Montfort. Members engage in spiritual and corporal works of mercy, including:

  • Home visitations to encourage faith and prayer.
  • Evangelization efforts, including distributing Catholic literature and inviting people to Mass.
  • Supporting the sick, elderly, and imprisoned through companionship and prayer.
  • Religious education and catechetical instruction.

Membership and Structure

There are two types of members:

  • Active members who commit to weekly meetings, spiritual formation, and apostolic work.
  • Auxiliary members who support through prayer, particularly the daily recitation of the Rosary.

The Legion of Mary operates in nearly every country, making it one of the largest lay organizations in the greater Catholic Church. It is deeply rooted in Marian devotion, humility, and obedience to Church teachings, relying on the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
